Is it a bad idea? Because I actually much prefer using my laptop on my bed (with hardcover book underneath) and lap (I switch between the two). I just want to know if theres any long term effects like the laptop overheating quicker/easier or possibly this.

If it's sitting on a book so that the FEET are touching the book and not the base of the laptop itself, it's fine. If you block off the vents with a book flat against the laptop, it'll run incredibly hot. It doesn't matter where you are.

As long as the laptop doesn't get so hot that it shuts off, you're fine. You can't cause any damage.

    Temporarily.

Sigh... as long as it has a good cooling system and no vents are blocked, intake or exhaust, i'm using my big ole' W700 17" on my bed right now on a pillow and the CPU is 30C and GPU 35C.... and that's a 17" system.

That is one of the reasons why I do not want to get rid of my 6920G. It has a large vent on the top of the subwoofer at the top of the laptop and uses this for main cooling. You can lie it on your bed and it never heats up and when you close the lid it opens the entire vent and stays around 40oc

I never use my laptop on a bed. There is so much dust and other particles on your bed. Be prepared for a clogged fan if you do it often.

Very few seem to have noticed that this guy is mostly concerned about the effects on his fertility, and not so much about the laptop. The article he linked to is correct, in principle, but you really need to spend a lot of time warming your balls with your laptop in order to sustain permanent damage. Unless you are bed-ridden and regularly spend many hours a day with the computer right in your lap, I would say to not worry about it, and in fact worry more about the increased buildup of dust inside the laptop.

Most of the time, by the time it shuts down, some components are already damaged.

i used to use my laptops sometime on the bed and it used to heat up like hell while watching youtube.. now with a notebook cooling pad ,doesn't heat up.. as long as u prop it up , shouldn't be a problem but i still don't recommend it.. especially for ur family jewels..

If you even think you are blocking air flow, you probably are.

    Why even take a chance?

If the machine isn't stupidly heavy/bulky then one of these will definitely be steady enough to hold it on a bed.

Easy Riser Notebook Stand - Ns | Ebuyer.com

Angle adjustable and it will keep those temps down too.

Not for lap use though. . .

The components that would overheat when on a bed or carpet are: processor, video card, hard drive, and chip-set.

I hope this thread is a joke. Since the most fundamental guidelines in computer operation is to keep it cool. As for the second part, your biological and physiological health is a matter best discussed in different website.

What else in a laptop runs hot? Those would be the components my friend. If the GPU get damaged, it may show artifacts etc, before it shuts down.

Lets try not to be too much of a smart aleck when we post, ok?

Dude you seriously did not get my question.I asked what are the components that GETS DAMAGED before shut down. You cannot answer because there arent any component that gets damaged.Computer sensors know better than us when to do what!

Like I said before, the video card is a component, that will can be damaged while running. I had an old Alienware laptop I was working on. I accidentally left the video card heatsink off when I turned it on. It started and and worked fine, when I realized it didn't have the heatsink on I quickly turned it off. After I put the heatsink back on, and turned it on. It worked, but it had been damaged, there where lines down the screen.

Moral of the story: It can be damaged while running/on.

thats strange. usually it automatically shuts down before it reaches its critical temperature.

also, the lifespan of the hard drive is reduced if its running hot all the time

Well it was your fault. Its like you are mixing the situations and giving a conclusion.Your sensors may be damaged,So it cudnt turn off itself. But its not like that for EVERY OTHER laptop. My sensors work perfectly and i am not worried about it!
