Is it okay to leave an SD card in a notebook's card reader for automatically backing up data?

It should be alright though to be safe I would unplug it any time you shut down or restart the computer. Also I would not use an SD card or a Flash drive as your only method of storage. While they are usually reliable they are vulnerable to corruption and at times that can seem to happen at random.

I would think so, are you worried about the card or the notebook?

The card would be fine, and I think that the notebook's card reader could withstand that.

My dell has a plastic protector stick in the card reader right now, so having a card blocking the dust may actually be a good thing.
