I am trying to find the largest 2.5" hard drive available now that is IDE and NOT Western Digital (I think they have a 250GB one). Please advise.

Maybe 160GB, such as the Samsung HM160HC (which should have 320GB equivalent performance since the 160GB is on one platter) or the Seagate ST9160821A.

I would second the 160gb drive from samsung. It has similar benchmarks as the 250gb wd, but without the wd name. :D

Thank you for the recommendations. I think the Samsung is the best choice. I don't know much about the technology behind it but back when I built a PC using silentpcreview.com's recommendations, it was with a quiet samsung spinpoint. I think the reputation will carry over to it's laptop drives as well.

You want the one platter Samsung. It will perform slightly better than the Hitachi (which I still like). I cant recommend Seagate but that's because I'm boycotting Seagates right now for a variety of reasons (the annoying clicking, drop in quality, etc).

I actually bought the Western Digital 250 GB when it was on sale for a monster discount. It performs exactly how I thought: fast, quiet, and hot. Very happy with it but I would not have bought it unless I had the deal I did
