Dealing here with a Toshiba Satellite....PA3362U...

When battery is taken out nothing happens-even if you plug it into mains power.

When you put back battery....and then plug into mains power...it works again...

Any ideas what this could be?

(also, that "low battery" beep happens alot on this laptop)

Definitely sounds like a bad power brick or wire. Do you have another power supply you can test with?

talin29's suggestion sounds like the 1st diagnostic to rule much in or out very good starting point. We are not talking about a short as near as I can tell because you would describing different symptoms in that case. So I can only assume what Talin29 is guessing is brick is not supplying correct power either voltage or wattage to run machine but is some how able to "trickle charge" Batt. I think this could be the brick or internal to notebook but either way my tip will maybe shed some light but not whether the brick or internal but will Identify a problem and how the system is working. In control Panel go to Power Options, in Power Options Properties click on the Advanced 1st box "always show Icon in system tray". Does it show a Batt or a plug?

Edit: Do what I said if it shows running on Batt when plugged in then internal, can't run on cord but cord can charge Batt. Getting low Batt because you cannot "rapid charge Li-Ion Batts. they charge very close to speed they discharge.

at the moment I can't even start it up ....it revs up,as if its about to start, but then cuts out...however, after charging over night, it will probably be fine in the morning..

I suspect internal and you are always running on Batt, when plugged in you might get longer use as some juice being added. If you charge for 1 hour and it starts check the Batt level. If it really takes overnight to start something is really starving Batt charging (power transfer). If charges 100% in normal time then direct connection of AC to notebook (for running on) is simply not functioning.

Well, if you can run off the battery fine (when it's fully charged), then it doesn't sound like a bad connection to the motherboard. Doesn't the DC in wire run through the battery terminal into the system? If so, then the connection between DC to battery could somehow be shorting. That's all I can think of.

Well then at or after where plug connects to notebook something is broke, you ruled out cord by using different cord same results. Computer is fine as it ran on the batt until lost power. While opening and physically inspecting might reveal the problem it might not. If you have a volt meter you could trace were connection goes bad and decide if it something you feel comfortable with or take it to a pro. I suspect a relatively simple repair and other than repair places charging $50 to $100 just to touch it and extra for everything else.
