I am considering upgrading my CPU and I need some magnetized screwdrivers so I would not lose the screws and springs when I removed the heat spreader. I also need the HD screws for the mobile HD to attach it to the HD bracket.

I googled for laptop tools but I found that most of them are demagnetized tools which I already have.

If any of you know of an online, reputable place to by these items please let me know.

    Thanks and Happy New Year,

I bought a pair of precision screwdrivers from a local hardware store and they are magnetic. I do not remember the name of them, so just go to your local hardware store and test them out.

The magnetizer/demagnitizers do not work very well. All the thing is, is a magnet, so making your screwdriver magnetic only lasts a few seconds.

The screws are usually size M2, M2.5, M3
Here is a site you can buy from:

I got a set of magnatized screwdrivers from Radioshack for like $10 four years ago. Different sizes of Philips and flathead. They have served me well on everything from my laptops to the family desktop (though I needed another tool) to a radio to Christmas ornaments to... :)

Just FYI: The reason why you find demagnetized screwdrivers are that you shouldn't use magnetized screwdrivers for such things, but if you do, be careful of not to fumble and hit anything else but the screw, otherwise you could end up destroying whatever you touch with the magnetized screwdriver.

So you are effed you do and you are effed if you don't. I dropped screws before and it ruined my day.

    Life is good. LOL!!!

I have always used magnetic screwdrivers. Usually they are not very powerful, so they do not harm the electronics in your laptop.
Just do not leave any magnets near the memory cards or the harddrive, just to be safe.

    Hehe.
Never hurts to be careful though, don't want anyone to ruin their PC. But i guess almost everyone has such a steady hand so they won't do any harm.

You must have used some real crap ones. The magnetizers I have used (I believe I bought a Stanley model, as well as a JobMate, both $5 items) will leave my screwdrivers/bits magnetized for well over a year.

You really need a lot stronger of a magnetic force than what one of these screwdriver magentizers produce on a head to damage the equipment. There is a much stronger magnet in hard drives.

You can make a magnetized screw driver easily yourself.

Just use the regular screw driver and stick that to a magnet block for a few seconds. You will magnetize the screw driver this way.
For me, I found the magnum block by opening the computer speaker.
There is a circular magnum right after the speaker cone with a metal plate attached.

Hope this save you some money.
    Happy New Year!
