Upgraded Laptops by forum users (work in progress)

I create this thread because I think that concentrating knowledge about laptop screen upgrades can help people who would like to replace the screen

    How knowing my panel model?
    you could use:
    -aida64extreme https://www.aida64.com/downloads/MTZlYWEwZTM=
    [IMG]
    -Monitor Asset Manager 2.9 https://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/moninfo.shtm
    [IMG]
    -Hwinfo64
    [IMG]

    What to know
    1) Is my panel LVDS or EDP?
    2) How many Pins?
    3) How many Lanes?
    4) What Voltage?

Where can I find infos about screens?

    The P870DM-G upgrade was to a B173ZAN01.0 - 17.3" IPS 4K / UHD / 3840x2160. Required 4lane cable PN#: 43-P8701-0201L (FTLOG don't pay USD$158 for this)
Awesome screen, great brightness, great colours, great viewing angles, great everything except for average transitions - like 20ms/30ms.
Gsync was retained with Premamod BIOS - but no Fn+hotkey brightness control (Nvidia control panel colour profiles still worked though but that's not true backlight dimming)
No overclocking beyond ~63Hz since that's the cable bandwidth cap

I also upgraded this P370EM from 1080p60 LVDS to 1080p120 eDP: LP173WF2 TP(A1) - same as from the 3D model of the same chassis (P370EM3). As stock of the P370EM3 specific 3D/eDP display cable couldn't be found I was advised by @clevo-extreme to use the P170HM3's 3D/eDP cable which works just fine.
Better than average TN panels of the day (2012/2013) but not as good as the AUO 95% gamut matte 15.6" (B156HW01 v4) on the P150HM in terms of colour/brightness
This model predates Gsync in all forms so is absent on hardware level
Didn't overclock it since already 120hz

Upgraded Alienware M14xR2 (1366x768) display to 1600x900 model despite re-seller telling me it won't work.

I was scared at first because it showed the Alienware logo then never turned back on, but after power cycling a few times it works fine now.

I'd like to replace the screen of my laptop (eDP 30-pin, FHD, IPS, Bottom right) because of its low PWM frequency. Will I lose the ability to adjust the brightness? I've seen that it may happen, just don't know how common it is or how to know if it is going to happen beforehand.

For a 120Hz 1080p, in this instance. But that is not a given; 1080p@120Hz can be squeezed within a 2-lane/30-pin as well, but the N173HHE-G32 uses 4-lane/40-pin, probably to be on the safe side. A very nice screen, btw.

so a 4k panel could also work with a 30pins cable? what about lane number? do you think an asus n580vd 4k panel could be replaced with a FHD panel?

Well ... technically yes, but only at 48Hz maximum and you'd need a 2-lane panel then (since 4-lane won't fit within 30 pins) and there won't be many of those. Also, the edid has to specify timings for it to run at that refresh rate natively. Mainly this was done for 4-lane/40-pin panels that had 48Hz timings for backward-compatibility on cheap-ass systems that could consequently claim ' 4k!' on the advertisement sheet.
Sure, less bandwidth is always possible. Might need a different cable though simply because of the pin count. If the reason is that that particular 4k is terrible then you might better switch to that G32 mentioned above. Its pin-out is identical to that of most 4k panels, so you keep the cable and have a much better panel to boot.

That ' BOE06F9' is merely the plug-and-play id. You might run MonInfo and copy/paste the ' Raw data' section, we could use that to narrow down the possible candidates. A more sure-proof method is to check with the sticker on the back of the panel or, even better, try and find the labels printed on the panel's pcb. That often means having to peel back a protective plastic sheet, so that may be too drastic a measure for most people.

That's because the person who entered the values for the edid didn't bother to include a descriptor block holding the panel number.

With Dell systems this common fare since they specifically order their panels re-branded with their own inventory numbers, rather than the panel manufacturer's number. In other instances it's simply because there wasn't any room left in the standard 128 byte edid. There's only four blocks of such data and that has to be shared with timing data. So if you wanted 60Hz+120Hz timings in both full-resolution and a lower one then you'd already saturate all blocks with no room left for the panel number. A 256-byte edid would be the proper solution then, but few manufacturers bother with that, also because you can't guarantee all drivers will read out beyond the first 128 bytes or even interpret the remainder correctly.

Anyway, the data it does show narrows down the list to these sixteen BOE panels. Unfortunately, there's 30 and 40-pins and 0.4 and 0.5mm pitch variants so this is still a bit too course.

Try MonInfo just in case HWiNFO missed a bit of info. Copy the 'Raw data' bit to make sure we get all the (non-interpreted) data:

If that doesn't help to eliminate the options then you'll have to look at the panel's sticker. This is on the back of the display, so it'd need removal of the bezel first. Mind that knowing it's a 30-pin doesn't yet help much if you can't rule out whether it's a 0.4 or 0.5mm pitch; jam a 0.4mm cable in a 0.5mm socket will cause an instant short. Vice versa you'd be luckier since it won't hook up unless you use excessive force (then, too; smoke).

The original to the MSI GT80 Titan SLI. Not sure exactly, just a generic 1080p 18" screen.

Aida and Speccy, along with the Device Manager, all just say "generic PNP monitor".
