WD if you want maximum performance.

Hitachi if you want the coolest and longest battery life.

I was possibly thinking about getting a 7200 but is it worth it for the price? ($179) I know that a 5400 can almost perform the same... I was thinking about the WD too. I don't mind if it gets a little warm... just don't want my legs toastin......

IMHO, WD is quieter. I have used both of them before.

How do you "know" a 5400 rpm drive performs the same as a 7200 rpm drive of the same capacity? I think you're confused about something - what you "know" is quite wrong.

A 7200 rpm drive will always always be faster than a 5400 rpm drive of the same capacity.

If you want high performance, the choice is clear. If you want lowest cost, the choice there is also clear. What is your priority?

I believe that is incorrect. There are differences between brands and models. For example: A WD 320GB/5400rpm outperforms a Seagate 7200.3 320GB in most of these benchmarks.

    defintely untrue statement,
a 160gb 5400rpm drive like the samsung hm160 which has 160 on one platter is much faster than a 160gb 7200rpm drive as well

Only if you are willing to spend half a grand, for less than half the storage space a good premium notebook HDD offers..

    Well said.

And for a half a grand you only get a 128GB OCZ Core which seems to have some drawbacks (sustained write speeds and multitasking).

So there are still plenty of reasons to go for traditional harddisks.
