So I currently have an Acer aspire 5332 With a intel celeron T3000 (socket P). It has an intel gl40 chipset. I was thinking that maybe I could upgrade the CPU to a core duo 2. Do you know if this would be compatible and if not any ideas on some decent CPUs?

It's not worth the time or effort. Even if someone gave you a free CPU, it isn't worth the time to do the install. CPU speed is pretty irrelevant in most real-world use cases; especially when you're doing a small incremental upgrade between CPUs of the same generation and platform.

If you really want to get some life out of an old laptop, put an SSD in there. Look in my signature for some videos I made back in 2010, about putting SSDs into a laptop that was manufactured in 2007 (also running a Core 2 Duo CPU). Even today, that 8-year old laptop is still a viable machine (if I still owned it) simply because it has an SSD in it.

It seems that you already reached the end of the ladder with your CPU:

Theoratically you could go till T9500 with Socket P but you would have to try it out. As already said: not worth the effort! Maxx out your RAM (2x2GB DDR2 800Mhz) and throw in a cheap Sata II SSD and you should be fine!

Hi, I know this is an old thread, but I also have an Acer aspire 5332 with an Intel celeron T3000, and want to upgrade the cpu, so it will be able to transcode Plex streams. As CaerCadarn said, it would be possible to put a T9500 in there, would it also be possible to upgrade to aT9600?
According to Intel, the T9500 supports the sockets: BGA479, PGA478, PPGA478 and, the T9600 supports BGA479 and PGA478, but not PPGA478. The T9600 is also only 35W.
Can I upgrade to the T9600, not only does it have a higher passmark score, but it goes for a lot less on eBay.

The CPU upgrade in your case may help, but the best RAM you can get into it will help quite well too. If you're on DDR2 667MHz for example, upping the RAM and getting 800MHz or if you somehow manage 1066MHz, would be very beneficial.

I don't know specifically about the upgrade on the CPU if possible or not, sorry.

For GL40, the T9500 would be the best hope.. The 1066Mhz FSB CPU's won't work without a pin mod or something so T9600 is out of the question.. getting some good RAM as you have said D2 is a good idea too..
