I ordered my laptop 1.5 week ago waiting for it to arrive, don't judge me on these weird thoughts. :D

So... let's say I go to a library and I do my things... read books, type down my research paper and stuff... All of a sudden a kid throws a book and it hits my laptop. The laptop falls down to the ground and breaks into pieces. I look at the person:

What should I say? I can't just say, it's okay, because it's clearly not.
Who's gonna pay for it? That's the first thing comes in both of our minds, right?
What if it was a man instead of a kid, does that change the scenario? And girl?
How would you deal with such situation if you were a student like me (no job)?

Up until recently ASUS gave a 1 year accidental damage warranty with free 2 way shipping. It may still be available, you only have to register for it.

I have home insurance that would cover accidents like that. It'll cover also if I stumble and break some else's computer :p

I'd tell them they broke my laptop and see what the response is. Call the police if they don't own up and offer to compensate. Make sure you get any witness accounts.

Invest in an accidental damage protection plan .... please. It will cover such an incident. It won't cover theft though, keep that in mind.

    Depends.
If it's an adult, they are responsible for compensating the loss of the laptop. That doesn't mean however that they are liable to pay you back every single cent, compensating could mean giving you their laptop or purchasing you another.

Also, if it's a child than its hard to hold them accountable and usually they wont pay for the loss or compensate since by law their not obligated to.

It seems like they don't cover it. -_- I have to go with a 3rd Party Insurance.
Which company do you guys trust most? Are you using any 3pInsurance?

Their parents are liable for any issues the children cause. A child, for example, cannot freely break your car's mirrors or headlights.

Usually if you could find the parent whose kid took your laptop they'll usually open up their wallet to it. ;)

Squaretrade is the most legit third party company. They insure for the full value of the system, and if you get accidental they cover most possible accidents. If something happens and the computer is destroyed they just send you a check for the full amount and you get a new one.

+1 to this, I'm on the road 4 days a week and many of my co-workers use them to cover their phones, I plan on using them for my next laptop purchase.

If someone else destroys your property, they are liable for the damages. As noted, there may be some exceptions to that rule if the person is a minor, but their parents would be liable for the damages in that case.

But I think it's much more likely that you would break your own laptop than someone else, even if you can't envision it.

If someone broke/damaged anything of mine of significant value and it was of no fault of mine, I'd immediately take down all their information and demand compensation under threat of notifying the police. If you're in college it should be easy enough to contact the kid's parents if they believe they are "above" paying you back (trust me, that attitude is commonplace in college especially on a big campus). The second you contact parents the kid will have the money in your hand right quick. :D

In the same vein, always keep backups of your most important data on both cloud services and portable media. I have at least three or four updated backups of my "Pitt Coursework" folder.
