currently its running on a hitachi 80gb 4200rpm ultra ATA hard drive. i'm wondering if this laptop is suitable for a SATA harddrive and whether if i will benefit from using a SATA harddrive over an ultra ATA drive. let me know.

this is the harddrive i'm currently looking at but i just thought maybe SATA might be better? i don't much about the SATA and ATA stuff. maybe someone can enlighten me?

    thanks.

SATA uses less power, I know that. I'm pretty sure it has better performance too. I'm going with a SATA in my new notebook.

a 7200RPM drive on SATA will be significantly faster our current HD.

i did a research tonight and it seems that SATA drives have a habit of using more power than ATA drives. at least it is so when looking at the benchmarks of the seagate and fujitsu SATA drives.

I'm pretty sure the LW40 uses SATA, but gotta double check that.

Right now, 5400 is the fastest a SATA will go, while 7200 is for PATA. I would opt for the PATA 7200, as when the 7200rpm SATA comes out, you can easily find a external HD for the PATA 7200, stick it in an enclosure, and go :)

yes, the LG does support SATA but as it comes from the box right now, my HDD is only 4200rpm ultra ATA.

i'm still deciding between a seagate momentus 5400.2 SATA 80GB or a samsung spinpoint 5400rpm 80gb ultra ATA drive.
