The backlight is on, but the screen stays 'black'. As far as I can see, there is nothing being displayed on the screen, and if I unplug the data/video cable off of the motherboard, the screen displays all white. The computer is working/turning on, and it can display to an external monitor without any problems.

My question is, what parts in the laptop are probably at fault?

PS. the laptop is a Dell Inspiron 710m

On Inspiron's it could be your motherboard or your monitor.

A good place to start is to utilize the port on the side of your laptop and plug into an actual monitor. If your LCD is bad your screen should show on your monitor.

If its your motherboard.... you will get nothing.

    Best of luck.

    Laptop's LCD is black, Right?

Check your laptop with an external screen. If the display cable is connected to your mobo, you may hae to click Fn+F1 to F12 to force the display to both the LCD and the external screen.

An alternative is to connect the external screen before you turn the laptop ON.

If you don't see anything in the external screen (i.e. black) than your GPU is faulty... it could be also a problem with your mobo. The only way to find out is to get a Radeon 9600 from ebay and test with it. Though, my guess would be a GPU problem.

In the other hand, if the external screen works fine it is likely your motherboard and GPU are fine, and your LCD is at fault.

Are you sure you can't see anything in your LCD? Point a flashlight a see if you can see something.

To force the display to an external screen is Fn + F8.

I can see stuff with an external monitor, and my computer isn't freezing up or anything. I guess I'll have to be buying a replacement LCD screen....

Every laptop is different; mine is Fn + F4.

At least your mobo and GPU are not faulty. Try to buy a panel with the same ref. as yours to avoid incompatibility issues.

Something is wrong w/ the LCD itself it seems and the easiest route will be to order a replacement screen from ebay or something or send it in if it's still under warranty. Unfortunately, even though I had to replace a screen before, I have no experience in how exactly they work so I can't pin point what the prob. may be. Hopefully someone w/ more LCD understanding :) could shed some light on the source of the issue.

When they go black the best solution is to replace them. To repair them will cost the same a replacing them

naton: What is your laptop? I work mainly with Dell's and 90% of the time the control is Fn + F8 ... but I appreciate the generality of your statement.
