I seem to remember reading on here that if a laptop's LCD goes, it is generally far too expensive ($700+) to repair - you'd be better off buying a new notebook.

So, if said occurence were to occur, would this be the case?

I'm not sure, but I think the RAM and CPU were fried as well. HD looks okay, but I'm not holding my breath.

Generally yes. There are stores that sell them for less than seven hundred (300+ though is pretty much guranteed) if you have a warranty use that (I have for my dell's)

Also have someone look at it (pro if possible) but yeah you will probably be best off buying new.

If your display's broken and there's no warranty on your notebook anymore, you could also try ScreenTek, they sell notebook displays without charging a fortune.
However, I've never actually bought something there, just read about them.
