Hello! Im preparing to purchase a laptop soon and i was wondering which CPU is better... the Intel Celeron M 520 or the AMD Turion 64 MK-36?

    its this baby:

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8398744&type=product&id=1179877238966

    Versus this baby:
    http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Compaq-Presario-15-4-Widescreen-Notebook-PC-F558US/sem/rpsm/oid/179768/catOid/-12963/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

which cpu is better performing in general?

i'd be doing music, firefox and videos at once...
hoping any recent single cores can handle SC II- for future reference.

Read the stickies. I wrote a CPU guide to handle questions like these.

Unless I'm mistaken, the Turion 64 is much better.

ohh i see the great list o' cpu's!

and according to that list, the AMD turion is better.

but this CPU has a poopy 512kb L2 cache compared to the 520's blazing fast 1mb L2 cache.

If you're not in market for Core 2 Duo, i think you should go for AMD if you're buying Celeron vs. Turion. Since AMD used to be good before Intel's Core...

The Turion 64 is 2.0Ghz that system has double the RAM, better IGP, larger HDD and a better OS.

The Intel has slower CPU, 1/2 the RAM, the lowest performing IGP on the market (standard) a smaller HDD and Vista home basic.

$50 for the Turion is well worth it.

The Turion was designed to compete the Pentium M, which the Celeron is a slower, cheaper version of. Needless to say, the Turion is far superior in all respects; speed, power consumption, architecture, etc.

That poopy L2 has twice the L1, Has 1600Mhz FSB and on board memory controller speaking of blazing. The L2 on the Intel speed is 1.6Ghz the L2 on Turion 2Ghz. The bandwidth of the RAM might be as much as 33% more in the Turion system.

Do not compare L2 on CPU's that are designed completely different.

Thanks for explaining it. I was going to explode on this one - as I believe that's covered in the guide as well.

Adiing to what has been said earlier, the Celeron M's lack power saving features like Speedstep(unlike the Core/Pentium M/Turion/Turion X2) which means it will run at max speed no matter if you are on battery or A/C power.

i read that celeron M's didnt have that kind of control but for my acer, the "Empowering Technology" seems to control the speed of the CPU... its got a Celeron M 370, 2Gig Ram and a GMA900 with a 36 gig hdd... whenever I select Max/High/Medium/Low, i can see and feel a difference... is acer the only name that has this?

They might just be reducing the bus speed through the BIOS which slows down the cpu but wont have the extra benefits as speedstep(deeper sleep states, turning off portions of the cpu etc).
