    Hi!

I would like some informations about the 965 mobile chipset family! I believe I have a GM965!

The GM965 is supposed to use the "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver", correct? This happens because the GM965 isn't supposed to have an non-integrated graphic card, correct?
Is it possible that my laptop has a GM965 and a NVIDIA 8600M GS graphic card? Is this "normal"? And if it is, should I also use the "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver"?

I'm really confused about this issue and my laptop manufacturer (HP) doesn't have a clue about this!
Thanks for your time and your help!

It is possible that you have a GM965 and a discrete graphics solution. While it is impossible for for a PM965 to ship with an IGP, it is possible for a GM965 to ship with discrete graphics.

Your statements aren't very clear with the double negatives and seemingly circular questioning. But let me try to explain, the GM965 is a chipset and it utilizes the GMA X3100 for its graphics. If you have a nVidia 8600M GS graphics card, you would be using the PM965 chipset.

edit: From what I know, I think only Sony has utilized the GMA X3100 and nVidia discrete graphics via hybrid system. While it is theoretically possible to have both, it would be pretty useless to have both, unless you could disable the discrete card.

Mobile Intel® 965 Express Chipset Family!
    PM965-Discrete only
GM965- Can come with Integrated or Discrete
    GL960- Integrated only

    They call:
    PM-Performance
    GM-Mainstream
    GL-Value

Funny as GM is the same as PM but has the capability to run on Integrated? So it seems to me the GM is the more expensive and PM is just a way for Intel to save themselves manufacturing costs.

Here is link to the Intel document. Now it lists the PM965 and all it's features in section 1.1, then section 1.2 is GM965 says supports all features of PM965 unless noted below. Additional features also noted.

Guess what? None are not supported and there are additional features most have to do with Integrated graphics 1.2.2, but some have to do with power management 1.2.3. So GM does all PM does and more. So how Intel defines performance? Marketing my friends gotta love it.

Actually it does make sense, as the GM965 would be able to dictate all power management functions due to it's solely integrated components. The PM965 would lose some of this ability, as it can't totally regulate the operations and effects from an extraneous gpu like an 8600M GS (for example).

Thank you all for your fast replies!

I have a HP dv9575ep laptop with both NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS and GM965 chipset, acording to the device manager and "Intel Chipset Identification Utility"!
And also, I do not have that mentioned GMA X3100...

So, from what you've said, it is normal for my laptop to have a GM965 and a discrete 8600M GS?
In this situation, am I supposed to use the "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver" also?

All of this confusion of mine started just today after recovering my laptop with a Recovery DVD that HP sent me...
From what I remember in previous installations, my laptop had the controllers for the PM965 since I bought it...
So after the recovery I called HP and they told me that my dv9575ep was equiped with the GM965...
I can not believe that it came from factory with the wrong controllers... Incompetence?

Well as R4000 correctly pointed out the power management features are Display related having the PM965 controllers may be the preferred, as you are not making use of the part of the chipset that makes a GM965 different from a PM965 so I would suspect they are fine.

But powerpack, this new Recovery DVD that HP sent me yesterday doesn't install the PM965 controllers... they install the GM965 ones, but not the "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver"!

You don't require the GMA driver because you have an nVidia card...........
