I picked up a couple of Intel 5300AGN cards on ebay because im planning on upgrading my wifi router in the future to a dual-band and I have a few older devices that i'd like to bring up to speed. Went for the 5300 because it was full height and that's what my older laptops etc take.
I put one in an old laptop to test (Dell XPS M1530 - Intel 965 - T7500 - Vista 32bit - previous card 3945ABG) and installed the drivers.
The card works during light use but as soon as I initiate a full speed wireless transfer from my server, the system freezes up and needs a hard reset.
I peeled back the sticker and the main black component has 'ES' as part of a serial number or product code.

Q025 ES
Does the ES mean it is an engineering sample? If so could this explain the freezes or could it just be a chipset incompatibility?

ES means Engineering Sample - which are notorious for doing what you described. Did you get latest drivers - that may be another explanation.

post picture.
I got 5300 - no problems. -

I dont think so. That's why I asked for picture to see where it says ES
-
A picture won't show it because it's tiny, I can barely see it. But it says ES on the main black chip under the label. There's several lines of text and Q025 ES is the third one. (Google JC82539MDE Q025ES and you get a tonne of hits)
Anyway I tried the second one and the behaviour seems normal, so it is not a chipset or driver problem. The second one also says ES.
I guess these ES ones are a crapshoot in terms of quality. I will try to send the dodgy one back to seller.
Thanks for replies -
