There was a thread a day or so ago about whther to install more RAM before reinstalling an OS. People seemed to be saying that you can add RAM no matter what and everything will be fine.

But is there absolutely no merit to doing a clean OS install if you put more RAM in a system?

You do not need to reinstall windows after installing RAM.

That thread was asking if he should install the ram before or after the installation of the OS. Installing the ram before the OS would install he OS faster which is better.

You do not have to reinstall the OS after upgrading ram.

Probably, if you're able, depending on what your machine already has installed.

Yes, but you will have to buy a 1GB stick, because you most likely(95%) have 2x512mb sticks.
You might consider to might a well upgrade to 2GB

    i have a question...

is it okay to have two 512 mb mem card and one 1gb card?

and also would the arrangement be an issue?

eg the 1gb card at the extreme end or in between the 512s...

*im assuming that laptops have 4 card slots....coz i rem seeing one pic like that..i mayb wrong..pardon me.

First things first...., these are not cards, they are memory modules......

And laptops will not have 4, but only 2 slots......., you can have any arrangement within those 2 slots..... :)

What you're thinking is 4 slots, is actually only 1 module. The other slot is empty next to it to the upper left.

The way memory modules fit in a notebook is essentially different from that of a desktop computer......

In a desktop computer, the memory modules are lined with the pinned side sliding into the slot, where as in a notebook, the memory modules are flat to save on space......

It means that you have 512 MB of memory and only 1 slot is occupied leaving the option of using the unoccupied slot.....
