    Is IEEE 1394 the same as Firewire but different name? Asus W7J has the IEEE 1394 and I was wondering if I could use external firewire hard drive for it. Thanks

    Edit: I found the answer but I just wanted to make sure.

    There are two types of firewire ports: 4-pin and 6-pin. Make sure the external HD has a cable thats compatible with the W7J, which I assume will have the 4-pin IEEE 1394 port otherwise you will need an adapter.

    Yes but most external devices that uses firewire usually comes with an adaptor so it works with either 4pin or 6pin.

    IEEE1394 == Firewire == iLink

    First is the "official" name from the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers, followed by Apple's name for the interface, followed by Sony's name for the interface.

    Firewire has become the defacto name since Apple was the manufactuer that developed the the interface (predating USB2) and it's a lot easier to remember than IEEE1394.
