A friend of mine has a venerable R31. It has worked great for a couple of years now. All of a sudden the whole computer (or at least the battery) get very hot when plugged in.
    Couple of questions.

    Is this a big deal?

Do you think IBM/Lenovo would pony up a new battery or is my friend going to have to buy a new one?

PS. any suggestions for good 3rd party batteries?

    thanks

Sounds like overheating. Try opening it up and clearing any dust in the fans and exhausts. (I am assuming warranty is over)

If it is no longer under warranty I don't see a reason why Lenovo should provide you with a new battery. Your friend would most likely have to buy a new battery.

Also stay away from 3rd party batteries. You are better off getting quality batteries from Lenovo.

ooops forgot to mention that the overheating goes away when the batt is removed. Are 3rd party batteries so bad? I ask because most accessory things IBM/Lenovo are overpriced.
