    Hi All,

Long time lurker. I tried searching but all I could find were threads with either i5 or i7 questions

So considering all other components the same, what setup would you go with?

I'm looking at doing some basic video/photo editing as well as casual gaming. As well as the MS office, email, browsing stuff.

I'm leaning at just going with the I7 so I can multi task. Does this chip provider on par graphics with an I5 and the 1GB Radeon HD 7690M GDDR5? I'm not looking to run crysis with max settings, just a decent framerate.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Anaom

If you want to game then go with the i5. While the integrated GPU isn't bad and will play most older games, it really won't last.

If playing Crysis at all is part of your user profile, it's not even a discussion. With the exception of some really poor console ports (like GTA IV) and maybe some RTS's, the i7 will be little or no benefit for gaming over the i5. On the other hand, the 7690m will be magnitudinally more powerful than the integrated graphics for gaming. If you're talking dv6t, you might also look into coupons. There's usually something on the order of $300/30% off of PC's specced to $1,000 or more, meaning you could get a dv6t quad edition with 1080p, 7690m, and maybe a few more upgrades for $700.

Which i5 and i7? I'd also agree that if you plan to play ANY games, go with the dedicated GPU. Unless you do some heavy heavy multitasking, the i5 should be plenty.

    The HD 3000 in an i7 isn't even remotely close to a 7690M. The i5 can multi-task.

I'd get the i5 and 7690M, the i7 HD 3000 is just way to weak, imo.

Just go with i5+7690M like everybody suggested, intel HD3000 isn't really meant for any kind of gaming, really. An i5 should be sufficient for some basic video/photo editing and your other needs, and the 7690M is MILES ahead of the HD3000.

That 7690M will totally eat an IGP alive on game performance.. But the i7 is the better Video Editing chip by a long shot.

    Tough call.. imo

For basic video and photo editing the i5 is more than adequate. If you were to encode tons of HD video, I'd say the i7, but for "basic" editing as you state, i5 is fine. You can't really game with the HD 3000 anyhow, at least not at high resolution, detail with any newer games.

Thanks everyone for the input. I believe the i5 will be the winner. : )

Glad I asked otherwise I would have had an i7 and crappy game performance. :D

Time to retire my old gateway 6860-FX. Too bad they don't make the FX series in laptops anymore.

Like what fat dragon said, if you spec your laptop over 1000 you can get it down to $700 with bluray, 1080p, and a ton of ram. I also agree about the gateway fx. Total shame.
