And I need a little help since I am new to this.

My hard drive went out and I replaced it with a 500GB WD that I picked up cheap.

I also replaced the cooling fan and cleaned the heat sinks. Since the dis-assembly is pretty easy and I wanted to get a little more performance, I was thinking about putting another Intel processor in it.

I have a T5750 in it with an NVIDIA 8600GS graphics card. So I am thinking this was one of the later model motherboard assemblies HP used. It is currently using 4GB of PC-5300 RAM at 667 mHz.

I would like to upgrade the processor to the T9300 as I can get one for $70 new and feel it would be a good cost = performance upgrade as it seems close to the new i-3 in terms of performance.

I have two questions, since I would benefit more from upgrading the RAM to PC-6400 at 800 mHz, would there be a big enough difference to go with 8GB vs 4GB to justify the extra $100 on memory?

Second, The original operating system was Vista, I upgraded to Win 7 Premium, but got a great deal on a Win 8 software pack. If I upgrade the processor and memory, can I do a clean install with Win 8 without crashing anything? And the other part of this question is will I need to flash a new BIOS when I finish the hardware upgrade?

Any help on this would be fantastic, and BTW, I do not have a copy of Win Vista that the computer came with. It got lost in my move/divorce, so if I have to use Vista, I will need another copy. My Win 7 was only an upgrade software pack, so I can't do a clean install with that.

$100 for 4 GB of memory? Hardly. Although if you were to run Windows Vista, then it would certainly help. But in Windows 7 and Windows 8 - each being subsequently more resource efficient, I think $100 is a little much for 4 GB, even if it is doubling your memory.

As for Windows 8, as long as your system meets the requirements, then installation won't brick anything. Just be forewarned that you may have some driver issues in 8 you may not have in Vista or 7.

Good luck! And post back if you have additional questions!
