Hi. Im am expecting to recieve my Inspiron 1720 on Friday and have ordered it with One Hard Drive. I want a second Hard Drive and have bought one its a Sata 160GB 5400rpm the same as the one already in the Laptop.

Does anyone know how to add a second Hard Drive? I need some pics+vids or anything that would guide me to adding a second Hard Drive. I have Vista pre installed on the one I've ordered but would in fact I would use XP for gaming and Vista for all the rest. So Vista is using one Hard Drive and XP using the second.

I have no clue where to find the Hard Drive in the Laptop and no clue how to look for an empty slot. Anyone with good instructions/guide/pics or anything would be really good.

You would also need a case for the hard drive so that it can be kept inside the 1720.... That I guess you should find from some other laptops probably on ebay...

The HDD you buy separately will be bare, without any fixings to hold it in the computer.

This image shows a metal plate with holes which is not part of theHDD but is a separate Dell component. It may be called a "caddy" (the Dell manual does not specifically identify that part).

See this thread in the Dell forum.

I had a word with DELL UK and they said if i insert a second Hard Drive then that will void the waranty. Has anyone come across this?

Its stupid. I can use an external HD I was told but not an extra internal Why does it void the warranty I asked they werent clear about it.

If your computer has a problem when you put in the 2nd HDD then Dell won't make it work for you because they supplied a computer with one HDD, not two. So you take out the 2nd HDD and if it still doesn't work then you call for warranty service.

The same usually applies if you upgrade the RAM. The computer's warranty covered the RAM it was supplied with (so I always keep the original RAM in case it is needed).
