When buying from reseller, such as Gentech, Xotic, Powernotebook, they offer "3% cash discount", basically you have to send cash directly into their bank account, I understand why they do this, avoid credit card company charging them for fee and what not.

However I was wondering what is the risk in doing this, is it really 100% safe? I know they are all reputable...hopefully.

Just a quick back ground, I am planing to get it from Powernotebooks, and if I were pay with cash, I would have to deposit them directly into their designated account.

IF anything goes wrong, is my money gone for good? or is there any back up plans... like when you pay with credit card, you can always file a claim on fraud and stuff..

I'm a newb and can't really speak to those companies first hand but if you have a discover card they're doing 5% back on online shopping this month "for online shopping and dept stores" but sometimes worded "for dept stores and online shopping" so i am not sure if the "online shopping" refers only to dept stores but you might want to look into that (you have to sign up at their site) and then you'd have the savings as well as all the added protections as well as the extended warranty they offer. And many amex, etc always do 1-2% so really you'd only be saving 1-2%?

that being said, powernotbook has some of the best cs ratings i've seen. So yeah it's safe, just depends if you want the *extra* protection. And I personally through all my extensive shopping the years, have never had to use extra protection even though i've always been covered.

And if it's a problem that occurs btwn ship and received, can you call your bank and ask if they would back you up? But given the company's amazing reputation, not sure that would be needed either.

Keep googling the name of your re-seller and key words like "problem" or whatever, see what comes up. I didn't see anything.I 'd say you're very safe.

Gentech, Xotic, Powernotebook; I have been following this forum for quite a while and from personal experience you will not have any problems with Gentech or Powernotebooks .. Ken Lee and Donald are true professionals and if anything like that ever happened and was posted here I would have seen it.
side note: its a shame that all sub forums do not have this : Sager Reseller and Clevo Reseller Forum, Sager Laptops

I don't see anything on Discover's website saying that they're running a special this month. Maybe you're referring to ShopDiscover? That offers certain discounts for shopping at certain retail/online locations. Unfortunately, there aren't any Clevo resellers on that list. The only laptop sellers on ShopDiscover are Dell, HP, Lenovo, Apple, and the Microsoft Store.

If I were you and going to buy a Clevo from a reseller for cash, I would buy from a local reseller in person. It's the safest thing to do.

I'm curious of if they consider debt cards to be cash (a lot of gas stations do, for example). At least with a debt card you have some sort of protection (as opposed to straight-up cash).

I checked. With XoticPC, they don't consider debit, credit, or PayPal to be "cash".

Weird. Mine totally has it. What does your bonus calendar have on it for December? Each month you get a bonus discount, 5%, often groceries, electronics, movies, etc. What's on your december?

Interesting, but not all that surprising.

Makes me wonder about not only Xoticpc, but also about: Gentech, Powernotebook et al
