My harddrive temp runs right around 42 to 46 depending on if its on the bed or on the desk. Is this high, about right or what? If its a little high what can I do to cool it down a little besdies making sure the vents have space and a cooling pad. I don't much like the idea of a cooling pad.

never run your laptop on a soft surface, such as a bed or couch. not only is it bad for ventilation, but the lint it sucks up will clog your fans over time leading to more cooling problems.

That is a fine temp. I have a 5400RPM fujitsu that runs in that area and speedfan gives it a good mark saying it runs cool. My hitachi which is 5400 also runs at 50+ (up to 60c) and is considered on the hot end.

Your fine. Try tinkering with speedfan to get temps down or to use your fans less :) Cooling pads are nice as they can bring temps down up to 10 degrees more than the machine will by itself but you don't have to have one

Oh and its probably not a great idea to put it on the bed, use your lap or a hard surface of some kind instead.

I hardly ever actually set it completely flat on the bed, maybe for a minute or two when I walk away sometimes.

When I refer to it being on the bed I usually sit indian style with it slightly propped up on my legs giving it a little angle and so the fan has some breathing room. Is that ok? Or should I even try to avoid that?

I noticed that mine heated up when sitting on my lap, so made a little laptop "desk" using a 12" x 16" piece of plywood for the notebokk to sit on. Not elegant, but does the job. Computer HD temperture now running at 34 C(HD Tune).

I think it is okay for you to use it on your bed. I do the same thing and prop it up with my legs. You just don't want materials like bed sheets blocking the vents.

Also your hard drive temp is fine. My hard drive sits at 40 degree Celcius alot.
