Most notebook coolers suck hot air out from underneath and then blow it out away from the notebook the notebook and they are very effective of cooling notebooks. A notebook cooler is a great thing to have for any notebook owner.

How many *C can they drop your laptop by? Because at £30 that is a bit pricey.

it can drop 8 - 10 C depending on how you position your laptop normally - That is cheap for the performance and protection of your investment (laptop) Normally the cooler your laptop runs, the longer the life. Antec is also one of the best laptop coolers by reveiw - I use it for my laptop / Xbox360 -

The theory behind this type of cooler is that it cools the whole bottom of the laptop thus allowing for more heat transfer/conduction from the internal components into the chassis and case of the laptop. I use the Zalman ZM -NC1000 and it has dropped my CPU and HDD temps 11 degrees C. Right now my CPU is 21 and the HDD is 30 writing this post. Look at the Zalman, it has about 650 small holes in it to cool all of the bottom of my dv9000t.
Most of the other coolers just have two or three fans and do not blow on all of the surface area of the bottom of the laptop. My HDD never gets over 40 C. Not cheep, $55 plus shipping.

Wow 30 pounds is a lot for that cooler! And the Antec cooler does not cool very good at all! I would look at something like Coolermaster or Notepal.

My laptop doesn't have any vent below (Asus Z96J, is has only one vent in the rear), I wonder if a normal cooler will do it, of if there are some other systems for cooling this kind.

You have to realise that if your notebook is already relatively cool, getting one won't help much at all. I'd only recommend those to people who bought the P4 on there notebooks (those poor souls - i'm one of them -, at least when we buy I new notebook, we know that we can recycle them as heaters, effective up to 5000 sq). Anyways, M, C2D, CD isn't exacly that hot
