well i just bought a compaq presario 1200z used. it came with 1ghz or 900mhz AMD cpu (mine's the 900)... i have searched the entire net and have not been able to conclude how high i can upgrade the cpu to. My common sense tells me that i could upgrade it to any amd cpu that has a 100 or 133 fsb. please some1 tell me if u know...what is the highest cpu that i can use in this laptop...thank u

(device manager notes the ide controllers as via..so it a via chipset mobo)

You're going to have to check with support to make sure the BIOS will run other processors. You're right that it will probably worth with a CPU that has the same FSB, but that's not a given.

unfortuantly, compaq won't support this anymore because it is not on warranty...even if they did, they would tell me its not upgradable, so that i would buy another one. is there any program that will tell u your mobo chipset???

Um...why not just work with what you have for now? (nobody wants to hear that)
This isn't the last laptop you'll ever buy...right?
What you have now is WAY more than enough to run most software, But, let me guess...It's either 'DOOM 3' or is It 'Half Life 2' or nothing? Right.

    You bought the wrong machine.

You have a very powerful piece of hardware before you. Most of the software you ever install on it will never make use of that golden 1GHZ.

    It's all marketing. '1GHZ 2GHZ 3GHZ NUMBERS. SPEED!! NUMBERS=POWER!!'
to get you to 'BUY BUY BUY! keep up or be left behind!!!' You can't win this game. You'll just waste alot of money trying.

There are parts that you can easly upgrade for better performance:
Harddrive(Your at 4200rpm I'm guessing?)and RAM. This will make a bigger impact in overall system speed than then that extra 100mhz ever will.

If your that unhappy with what you got, sell it or return it and get get what you really need/want. That's a better route then wasting the time, energy and money trying to upgrade a part that was never meant to upgraded.

ok, yah i am gonna upgrade the memory and also going to a 7200 rpm hardrive, but these are things i already know i can do to this laptop, the only reason i want to upgrade the cpu is because i am thinking that with it being "socket a" with 133fsb...that i should easily be able to upgrade it to any mobile cpu using the same. and oh yah..no doom 3 or any 3d accelerated games on this machine. but if u can go faster for not much more money...why not?? So here are my results....i ran everest and found out that it is a via vt8363a kt133 chipset (which will run a 133 fsb)...but something very strange occured. Everest told me that my cpu is a mobile athlon 4 (palamino)running at 100fsb x 9 (900mhz), Everest also reports under the overclock section

    "100fsb x 9 (original 133fsb)"

so this cpu was underclocked from factory. now, does that mean it will not accept a cpu over 100mhz?? or does that mean that the bios will automatically scale any cpu with 133 fsb down? Also take note that i did install my desktop 2100+ palamino in the laptop with no success. when i tried to power it on, the light flashed on then off quickly. After installing everest on my desktop pc i discovered that my 2100+ was running 50-55 watts, and the mobile cpu in my laptop was running 20-25 watts (can't even test it with a desktop cpu). so is there anyway of knowing what mobile cpu thats socket a, will work in my laptop without buying one and trying it?? also, will there be enough power to supply a 7200rpm harddrive??

    thanx again
