Finally I've been waiting when Hitachi will release a 320GB 7200rpms
I really don't like Fujitsu 2.5 HardDrives, So I stick on getting the 320GB 7200rpms from Hitachi.

Oh and I bet the next 2.5 harddrive Hitachi realease will be a
    500GB 7200rpms in 2009

    Think price here.
We all know how fast and good the 200 GB 7200 rpm hdds are, so Imagine this one, which is 60% more dense. :)

You think $220 for 320gb compared to $650 for 120gb is a meaningful difference? :)

    For 650$ you can get 3 320 GB=~1TB 7200 rpm drives :)

Was it the smiley in my post that gave it away? :D

I'd pay the higher amount for a major improvement in performance, but it's not clear how much better the SSD is than the HDD. Plus the capacity issue of course. I can only fit one drive at a time.

Hitachi's press release includes: "The new drive delivers 60 percent higher capacity than its predecessor, while improving application performance by 12 percent and power consumption by 22 percent." 12% may be less of an improvement than anticipated (your reference to 60% more density).

Hitachi 7200 RPM, 200GB and 320GB spec, side by side

Let's hope that storagereview.com will benchmark the drive very soon.

That looks sweet... I think I'll skip the WD Scorpio and jump for this instead!

But, how bad is this for power consumption and noise?

I know. 60% increase in density does not translate into 60% increase in performance.
But,from the 5400 and 7200 rpm standpoint, the 60% increase in density is enough to make a 320gb 5400 rpm driver equal in performance to a 200 gb 7200 rpm one.
    So a 320 7200 would be as good as 512GB 5400 rpm,following the increased density=increased performance idea.

The 160 GB Hitachi 7200 is fairly quiet - not silent of course but certainly not loud either - so I suspect this one will be quiet too. And power consumption is already pretty low, at least to the degree that you won't notice it on a notebook with a standard battery life of 3 hours, give or take 2.

It's less than how much two sticks of RAM would take even at full power, and near zero on idle, according to the spec sheet.

Spec sheet says noise will increase by 1 decibel, to 29 decibels, at typical seek. Not bad.

Better than the current 500 GB 5400's, as they simply add another platter to what the 320's were.

Certainly looks like a good option. Pretty much removes any motivation to buy a high-capacity 5400 drive.

Yes,exactly. I`m pretty much sick of 5400 rpm drives,it`s the only ones I`ve had and they`re too slow for me.
This Hitachi is my next hdd for sure.Unless somebody makes a better one till July :D

I cannot wait to see the benchmarks of the drive.
I am either upgrading to this drive or the WD Velociraptor for my laptop.

I have a good feeling about this drive, Hitachi makes some of the best harddrives out.

Isn`t the Velociraptor NOT for laptops, as it is a 10k rpm one? I never heard it being officially approved. Unless you have active cooling for it...

Power consumption didn't change at all when I got my 7200 200gb (upgrade from 5400 80gb). Noise only increased slightly when seeking quickly, but other than that its a dream. The increase in speed is a lot nicer with vista as the little things don't take as long to process. I love it and will soon probably buy a 320gb 7200rpm.

I can upgrade to a velociraptor, but 99% of laptop users cannot.
My Voodoo is based on the D900K chassis, and so far, the only laptops, which have a 12v line for the sata port are the D900T and the D900K. The D900C and D901C do not have a 12v rail, since their sata ports are controlled by a standard cheap Intel chipset, rather than controlled by a high performance via SATA controller.
The D900T and K also both have active harddrive cooling for every drive, which every other desktop replacement lacks.
I will be upgrading to these drives, when I get a hold of them. My cooling system is better than any other laptop has, cause of my homemade harddrive bay, which can accomodate 2 30mm thick harddrives, and its cooled by a 17.6cfm EBM PAPST industrial grade fan, which pumps more cooling power than the sum of all of the fans in most laptops.

But if a new drive comes out by the time the Hitachi comes out, which is very likely, you'll say, "Oh, I'll wait for that one then." And during the wait there'll be a next one.. And.. Rinse, repeat.

No no, I desperately need a new drive and that will be the best one on the market in June/July.
I`d love a 500GB 5400 rpm one, but the 320 7200 Rpm one is an awesome choice also.

Just right now, loading times in Half Life 2 for example kill me.
And all the things just load soooo slow.
That`s why I`m in the market for a new drive. Been using 5400 drives in my laptops since forever,so the 7200rpm upgrade will surely be a blessing for me.
And by June/July people will be able to report how the drive behaves. I hate being the guinee pig for anything :D

It won't fit the vast majority of notebooks anyway, as its form factor is too tall to fit in most notebook drive bays. And of course, heat would likely be an issue, as well as the fact that the drive isn't designed for notebooks from a power consumption standpoint either, so battery life has the potential to be significantly reduced, compared to a Hitachi 7.2k drive specifically designed for this purpose.

Hopefully the introduction of Hitachi's 320GB model will bring down the price of the 200GB models. I don't need a 320 in my notebook, but if I upgraded for speed, I'd upgrade for capacity as well, and so that I could more easily dual-boot between Windows and either Ubuntu, OpenSuSE, or OS X x86.

If not, I can wait a little bit. I'm in no hurry.

The 500gb 5400rpm drive uses 3 160gb platters, so it has the same data thoroughput as a 320gb 5400rpm drive, which is 52mb/sec

The 7k320 should be averaging about 70mb/sec, which should be really amazing.

I would take a Hitachi over a Western Digital because of my past experiences. I have never had any problems with Hitachi in the past. Western Digital is another story though. I have had 37 of a batch of 40 drives dead within a month, and that has persuaded me to stay away from Western Digital. This was about 4 years ago when this happened, so their quality may have changed since then.

Actually I am. I'm grabbing one. If I don't like it I'll use it in the ultra bay of my W500. Either way that is cheap enough for me. Thanks for the FYI. It will improve over the current one I think...

Yeah resurrecting the thread not the greatest idea, but cool to see the comparison in prices.
