I bought a Hitachi TRAVELSTAR 5K500 hdd today and I just found out that it is about 3mm thicker than "normal" 2.5" (I though all SATA 2.5" drives had the same height...) I checked the Hitachi site and I found a pdf which has the 15" MacBook Pro listed as one of the compatible laptops but with an asterisk which denotes z-height compatibilty (???) Has anyone been able to fit this in a 15" MacBook Pro?

The Hitachi 5k500 is 12mm thick, instead of the standard 9.5mm thick.
If you just received the drive, I would contact the manufacturer for a return. You will want to get the samsung 500gb 5400rpm drive, as that one has a standard 9.5mm thick chassis, which will fit into your macbook.

Are there any 500 GB 5400 rpm notebook drives already?
I thought the biggest one was 320 Gb...

The Samsung is much too expensive,so if June/July won`t bring a 7200 rpm 500Gb one, the Hitachi will be my next drive :D

Can the Sager accommodate a 12.5mm thick hard drive? I would think it would have the same problem as the Macbook Pro.

which sager are you referring to?
Most of them cannot fit a 12.5mm harddrive. I think the first mainstream computer which fits it is the ASUS G70. (I think thats the name of it)

I was just responding to eleron911's post, who lists the Sager 5791 in his signature and expressed a desire to buy the Hitachi. I'm assuming he's purchasing the Hitachi for his Sager laptop

Yes, that is correct. I`ll have to look into it, but I don`t see why not, when I opened my laptop there seemed to be enough space.
I will double check on this, the 500GB storage sounds sweet.

Thanks.... will I be able to fit it into any 2.5" enclosure/case? Or do I need to look for one that is thicker?

I am not sure on that one Kal, there should be a few on the market which can hold a 12.5mm thick drive, but I do not know of a external enclosure by name which would work.
If you can, try sending the drive back and getting the samsung drive, so you can actually use it in your laptop.
