    Hi Folks,

My T400 is arrived with a Seagate HDD. it really quiet but the performance is normal.

NCIX Canada have summer sale now. I want to upgrade my T400 with one of below HDD:
    - Hitachi 5K500.B HTS545050B9A300 500GB
    - WD Black 320GB WD3200BEKT
    - Hitachi 7K320 HTS723232L9A360 320GB

Anyone who has experience with 3 HDDs above, please give me some advice because my wallet is really empty now sothat i only have one choice. I need a HDD with good performance, quiet and do not burn anything.

I'm a fan of Seagate, but recently, a lot of people have bad experience with Seagate, especially bad firmware, so I'll comeback with Seagate later.

Thanks you all for fast support.

Try searching via shopbot.ca or pricecanada.com, I find NCIX is still expensive even during sales. If you need capacity, go with the 500GB, else I'd either of the 7200 RPM drives (whichever is cheaper).

If you need performance, I highly recommend the 7K320. I'm using them for my M1730 in RAID 0, and the performance is excellent, quiet and fast. Power consumption? I'm a guy who care less about battery life, I only want performance, so well I can't really judge it because the M1730's batt life is like - an hour or less? LOL.

If capacity is a concern, the 5K500 is excellent too and not to mention the power consumption is one of the lowest there is for this 500GB HDD. You can't go wrong with this thing. The performance is very similar to WD500BEVT. I have personally tried and tested with all the drives.

Perhaps K-Tron could explain more in detail.

I just replaced two 7K320's with two 5K500.B's. They 4-5 degrees cooler in my rig.

Nice to hear about that. :)

PS, guys I just received my Momentus 7200.4 500GB drives. Planning to RAID 0 em' and compare them with my 7k320s in RAID 0 too. Will be posting benchmarks soon. I predict the 7k320s will suffice.

    As far as performance goes
    (WD3200BEKT = Hitachi 7K320) > Hitachi 5K500.B

    Power efficiency
    Hitachi 5K500.B >>>>>>>>>>>>> Hitachi 7K320>>WD3200BEKT

    Thermals
    Hitachi 5K500.B <<<<<<<<<< (Hitachi 7K320 = WD3200BEKT)

If your laptop is very thin, get the 5K500.B it has similar performance to the 320gb 7200rpm drives, but it is more power efficient and runs cooler.
You will notice a boost in performance going to 7200rpm, but it is not a night and day difference. It is only a marginal increase
In real life performance the WD3200BEKT is slightly faster than the Hitachi 7K320 in terms of application loading. The Hitachi is faster as loading windows. Please note the percentage differences are small, nothing to really brag about.

In all honesty get the 5K500.B if you want a cool running drive
If you want that marginal speed increase go for either the WD or Hitachi 320gb 7200rpm drives. Decide between the two based on price

Just make sure of one thing
Do not get the 5K500 - It is 12.5mm thick.
I have noticed most stores have it for less than the 5K500.B, which can be misleading to the unknowing customer. The 5K500.B is the standard 9.5mm thick
