Hello, since yesterday something wierd has started happening, I formatted my laptop and installed kaspersky antivirus instead of avira, and suddenly my idle temps (which used to be about 55 C) became bout 69C, which was pretty high since i was literally not doing anything, I even checked all open processes, went to watch tv leaving my laptop doing nothing but the temps were still about 60/70C, since I had been using Avira Antivirus I thought that maybe kaspersky was using my GPU so I formatted my pc again, installed avira instead of kaspersky, and it all worked fine! Temps around 47/53C on idle, awsome! Then i started decompressing some winrar files I needed and BOOM 69C again, I thought maybe it was because of winrar so I shut down my laptop, let it cool off, turned it on again after about an hour and still got 69C, I tried both my default nvidia driver (186 something) and the latest driver (19x something), my video card is a GTX 260M and im really worried since my idle temps are actually hot now, without any running processes (only those that windows requires), i cleaned the vents and im having a good air flow too..
Any ideas on what the problem could be? please help me!

Check if Powermiser is enabled. It should be.

You can use a program called powermiser switch.

Since you formated, im assuming you also installed the latest video drivers in, and this might be the cause of your high idle temps, a lot of the new drivers dont properly downclock at idle/2d (download GPUz and check the gpu clocks under idle). Try out NVIDIA GeForce v186.82 WHQL Drivers, have work well for me, the only driver that downclocks correctly for me atm.

There are other alternatives that will allow you to use any driver like
PowerMizer Switch - get the most out of your video card
[How To] Use Rivatuner as a better "Powermizer" alternative

Wow..i just noticed the wierdest thing, I have an external monitor connected to my laptop and the display settings set to extended, and now I unplugged that monitor just in case and guess what, my temps went to about 39C oh my god..but..I really want to use that monitor..is there any way to use it and not get 70C?
And thanks for the replies, they were all really helpful!!
UPDATE: I now tried using my external monitor but changed the screen settings to show desktop only on 2 (which is my external) and temps are about 46C, I still find it wierd since I've had the extended display settings a long time now and I never had a problem with temps, but since the last 2 computer formats the temp somehow seems to go up when I use dual monitors with extended display, any idea why?
I tried rivatuner once but I got BSOD's every time i tried to launch a game so I uninstalled it.

UPDATE 2: GPU now running 60C on idle when ONLY using my external monitor..dang..any ideas for me to be able to use my laptop and my monitor without causing heat problems?

It seems that that is your problem.
Having your GPU run both your screen and the external monitor is using the GPU as a result it doesn't downclock (not idle) resulting in higher temps, when you are not doing anything on your pc
Not sure what you can do, but I think there was a guide posted in the gaming section that told how to use RivaTuner to downclock the card when idle. You might want to give that a go

Another reason that idle GPU temps go up is due to dust build-up.
Have you cleaned out your vents recently?
If not I would recommend you get some compressed air, open up your laptop and clean the fan, and heatsink fins thoroughly using the compressed air.

If you can't reach your laptops heatsink easily, then switch off your laptop, and blow compressed air from both the air intake area, and from the exhaust vents.

This might help reduce your temps, and if not will eliminate dust as a cause of high temps

    Hope this helps :D

This is a classic NVDIA powermixer issue...in windows 7.. i have this issue too... the solution i used was to get the 195.62 drivers... To overclock , then i used NVDIA system tools... I then did that riva tuner [How To] Use Rivatuner as a better "Powermizer" alternative guide... i would try this combo... this will be the only thing that will solve the issue in windows 7... because it occurs even with 186 drivers...
