Hi, I am new to the site and am not sure if this question may of been asked

somewhere else. But I have a Sony Vaio laptop (may not be right spelling)

and ever since I have had it, it doesn't always play Cd's or DVD's (genuine)

i'm at a wits end with it, as this means my Mp3 player is still empty.

Any suggestions to why this may be would be grately appreciated.

    Ta newbiee x

I'm sorry. I don't get what you are trying to achieve? Are you trying to play CDs and DVDs or are you trying to transfer MP3s?

All of these are software issues and not hardware related.

Which Windows version are you running? Vista or XP?

What software are you using to open CDs and DVDs? Windows MEdia Player?

What model is your Sony? I will check if there is a firmware update for the built-in DVD drive.

There is no DVD firmware update on Sony's website.

I think this may be covered under Sony warranty.

Can you boot using the Windows installation / recovery disc?

If so, it means the problem is in Vista and not the computer's hardware. The first place to look is for the Upper Filter and the lower Filter in the registry. See this thread (but there are plenty of others).

No problem. You should try John's suggestion. If that doesn't work, then maybe you should send it back for warranty repair. I tried to look on the web, but haven't come up with anything yet. Will let you know if I do.

    :)
