So I installed a new Seagate 100 gb 7200 rpm Momentus SATA drive in my Dell Inspiron e1705 last night (in place of the existing Fujitsu 80 gb 5400 rpm drive). When I turned the computer back on, I inserted my Windows XP cd which started the installation process.

It recognized the drive, and when it came time to initialize it, the process got 75% of the way through, but then the computer completely shut off (lost power) even though it was plugged into the wall and there was no power surge or anything. Now when I turn it on with or without the Windows XP cd in it, it says "Error loading operating system". Any ideas on where to go from here? I'm lost.

1.) Make sure your BIOS boot priority is set to boot from your ROM drive.
2.) Re-Install XP, deleting the existing partition and repartitioning the drive.

    See how that works.

How do I set my BIOS to boot from ROM drive? That's not something I've ever messed around with before. In this case, the computer won't get very far-

    1. hit the power button
    2. says Dell
    3. black screen reading, Error loading operating system.

To enter the bios, you need to press a particular key as the computer turns on. Without knowing your exact model number, its hard to know exactly which key you have to press.

Usually it is either F2 or DEL.

So as you turn on the machine, press F2 and/or DEL repetedly to get into the BIOS. Then just find the correct place to change your boot setting to have it boot from your ROM first.
