A few years ago, seagate hard drives took a dive in reliability. Have these issues been fixed?

I gave up on Seagate - not only in the reliability but also in the compatibility and the performance side of the equation too.

That changed with the first Hybrid HDD they offered (and the Firmware upgrade that made it finally perform as it should have from the beginning) and continued with their latest/current Hybrid offering.

Anything else that says Seagate on it is still avoided like the plague (and with prices of SSD's as low as we are experience (not 'low' on an absolute scale - but 'low enough'), there is no reason to keep trying them and hope they've fixed their numerous issues.

Hitachi TravelStar's are my #1 choice and with WD buying them out; by default WD is now the first and only HDD I'll consider for a system (if I can't find a Hitachi still on sale).

Seagate should be fairly reliable now. Their Momentus XT drives were pretty well received (more the 750 GB drive; the 500 GB drive had several firmware and hanging issues).

I'd still go only with WD drives. I had Scorpio Blue/Black drives that never caused me any issues.

They're all about the same. I've had every kind of HDD drive die on me. Strange thing is I've had a lot of desktop failures, and very few laptop drive failures. Recently had a Hitachi drive fail on me in my desktop. Covered under warranty but still failed.

Reliability-wise, I've had similar experiences with all brands. Seagate is fine.

They are fine, I use 2 of their 2012 HDD's with no issues.

I use nothing but Seagate for conventional and hybrid drives and haven't had any issues.

Don't listen to anybody who says that WD drives are awesome, Seagate drives are crap, or that you should never consider Toshiba.

Also even though Samsung drives are owned by Seagate, and Hitachi drives are owned half by WD and half by Toshiba, Samsung does not sell Seagate drives, and Hitachi does not sell WD or Toshiba drives.

Although the number of drives I have bought in recent years has slowed to a trickle, I have bought multiple drives from Hitachi, Maxtor, Samsung, Seagate, Toshiba, Quantum, and Western Digital. Funny enough, the drives that gave me the most issues over the years have been Western Digital, followed closely by Seagate. My current favorite is Samsung, and I will be sad when they get completely folded into Seagate.

This. I have a pair of 500GB Seagate Momentus XTs running in this laptop for a few years now. You know, the ones that had "several firmware and hanging issues". Never had any issue with them at all.

i was a seagate fan earlier on, then came its downfall and switched to WD...no concerns what so ever, (not to mention the older seagate's which were still churning on) i used a samsung 500gb that ran cooler, faster and at lesser power than any drive i had previously owned however in (2011-2012) a NAS enviourment i had muchos problems with a seagate (click of death) and that eventually had to be replaced....after quite some haggling and then the turn around time (floods in Thailand in those days) the replacement part has never given me any grief....and now i have (4x Seagate, 2 WD's incl 3.5">2.5") and -knock wood- all of them still working

All I said was that Samsung was my favorite. And if you think I'm against Seagate or WD, I'm sorry if you misunderstood me. But in the laptop I'm using right now, I have a WD Black HDD, and I still have the working WD Blue that I removed from it. Also in my mini-ITX builds I have used Seagate 2.5" HDD's because I had lots of spares, but I have no qualms with using them.

My longest-lived hard drive is a Seagate. I bought a 120GB ATA-100 Seagate drive in late 2004. In early 2005 a chip on the circuit board exploded inside my computer with a loud bang. It's RMA replacement still works fine as an external back up of a back up of a back up of my most precious data.

I think over half of the hard drives I have ever bought I stopped using because they failed after their warranty expired. I just pulled it out to take a look at it, and the second oldest one I still have in service is a 500GB Samsung with a manufacturing date of July 2008.

Been using multiple seagate 2.5" and no problems what so ever. They may not be the fastest kids on the block, but they are as reliable as the others. Hitachis were my favorite drives, silent and decent performance. The WD blacks in my experience are among the noisiest drives I have used.

I've had several brands of HDD and SSD over the year, and all have generally been reliable. The only HDD to outright die on me was some WD external drive, though I'm getting some SMART warnings on one of my desktop Seagates.

In a nutshell, HDDs are all equally good. Or if you're a pessimist, they're all equally bad.

    Get the best price/warranty.

About 4 years ago, there was a "downfall" of seagate referred to here. Was that downfall unjustified?

Honestly i like Seagate WD and Samsung. I had one of the failed drives but, it was replaced at no cost to me, every singe other seagate i have works just great. Unfortunately no drive manufacturer is perfect if any body is to dis it's Hitachi.

I like Seagate on desktops and HGST (formerly Hitachi) on notebooks, Western Digital gives me headaches on on both (desktop and laptop); Samsung and Toshiba drives are pretty much non existent to me except maybe as an external HDD.
