My notebook which is an asus a8js currently has this
hd http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/site/en/menuitem.428b96664d580c5deb4703e3aac4f0a0/
in it and to prepare for college I'm looking to get a new one with some more space and maybe faster.
I was wondering if I could buy this http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/site/en/products/travelstar/7K320/ drive and do a direct swap? If not could someone recommend a hd for me?
thanks for the help

Yes any SATA 2.5" drive will go.
7K320 is a good choice, Seagate 7200.3 may be cheaper. According to some benchmarks our members ran the 7200.3 is even faster in PC Mark than the Hitachi. However this was not confirmed in the review at Tom's Hardware.
The Seagate is definetly quieter and also cooler I believe. WD3200BEKT is another option but probably more expensive. -
Go for any of the new 320gb 7200rpm drives, every one of them will show a great performance increase over your current 5k100. I personally have two 7K320's, cause I am a Hitachi fan for their reliability. I will post benchies this weekend,

unfortunately the 320 i wanted was out of stock so I juts went for the 7200.3 250gb, nothing wrong with that choice right? besides the loss of 70gb?

supposedly the 250gb uses two platters and has three heads instead of 4, so that it only uses three of the 4 sides of the disk.
This is what we believe here, but we dont know for sure, cause we dont have any benchmarks.
The only other way to make a 320gb drive 250gb, is to limit the head movement on the drive, and that would slow down the drive, since the heads will not be able to use the entire area of the disk.
