My current laptop comes with a 160gb 5400rpm HDD... sure its a fair bit of space, but i just would like a bit more storage space for games, music, movies etc.

So how many HDD's can i fit into a lenovo thinkpad r61, along with the one already in there even if its just a small HDD???

Upgrade your HDD that is the simple answer. Buy a 320GB for under $150. Or get an external for storage/backup!

yer.....i was gonna buy a portable external hdd, but though that if i could fit another hdd in my laptop it would be better.

but now i think ill go and look for an external one

On that note, buy a very good HDD, for internal, say a 320GB for under $150. Then buy an enclosure, I think they cost $20 to $30. Use your current as external? ;)

    hmmmm nah

i dont really wanna go messing around with my laptop's hdd and i'd rather buy a good external western digital 250gb titanium casing and 5 years warranty for $200 ... i live in australis so things r a little more expensive

I agree with powerpack. Hard drive upgrades are one of the simplest upgrades for notebooks, it typically just involves unscrewing a few screws and pulling out the hard drive. Building your own external hard drive is also a good idea as it gives you the flexibility for later on. Also most notebook hard drives come with at least a 3 year warranty.

just to support shave, not all hard drive upgrades are that easy. upgrading a hd in an ultraportable (like mine) involves removing the screen keyboard, and the internal motherboard lol. but seriously your laptop is a 14", so you should have no problem !

Yep, a 320 GB hdd is very good and very fast.
It`s not worth getting a second one, since you won`t be able to RAID it.
Plus you`ll keep the bay with an optical or whatever drive you already have.

He was looking to ADD one but not SWAP one? Seems that adding could be even more trouble than swapping, IMHO.

bubbatex he doesnt want to upgrade the interior hd because he thinks 'playing around' with his laptop will shorten its lifetime. I just want to persuade him that swapping an interior hd in his laptop would be such an easy procedure that he might as well go for it, and seriously this will not shorten the laptop's lifetime lol

    From his first post:

"So how many HDD's can i fit into a lenovo thinkpad r61, along with the one already in there even if its just a small HDD???"

    I added the bold. ;)

he also says (in bold) 'i just would like a bit more storage space for games, music, movies etc.' other posters suggested him swapping the interior one out for a higher capacity hd then putting the one he replaced in an external enclosure lol :)

    WOW guys settle down

i think i got my answer in the second or third post and i could replace my hd if i wanted but its easier 2 go buy an external one now i know i can only fit one in there

btw i dont want 2 have 2 go through the hassle of moving all my files, my OS and re-installing all the games which is why i only wanted 2 c if i could fit a second hdd in

yeah, just get a 250gb.. the speeds are comparable to 320gb ones
and, like eleron said, its not worthwhile have 2 hard drives in your laptop, it'll just kills battery life badly

damn it just buy a 320 GB one, hitachi, fujitsu or western digital. it's soooooooooooo much easier than an external one, external hard drives are good if you wanna move it around for back up and transfer between computers, but for laptops, externals are just plain stupid in MY OPINION. Also, from my experience, having a second (internal OR external) hard drive is annoying because I know that some programs require you to install them on the MAIN hard drive (the one with windows installed) and some of it on the other hard drive. also installing programs and games would be annoying if you move it around a lot. This means that you HAVE to have your external with you WHEREVER your laptop is, or else you can't access your files/programs. Just get a 320 GB one and clone the drive, it's verrrryyy simple. Again I see you're destine on getting an external, but we would all recommend against it.

The trial version of Acronis will do the job fine. You will also need a USB 2.5" HDD enclosure to do the cloning, but that can also become the home for your old HDD.
