    Hi, I just ordered a vostro 1710, with a 160GB 5400rpm hdd.

I noticed that when I was configuring the components, there was options for two internal hdds. Is it possible that I can add another hdd after I get the laptop or will dell do something to stop me(Like do something to the second drive bay).

I can't see a second hard drive in the service manual.

It may be an option that goes somewhere, but it probably needs a special caddy which you have to buy.

    thanks johnny T.
I think I might have to do some DIYing to get a second hdd in there.
I need my photo-eched precision saw pieces now. :D

So there are! It looks as if you just need a second ribbon cable. It will be worthwhile searching ebay for one. Dell may charge a silly price.

yep, this is why I don't like those big system manufacturers, last time I looked at dells site. You need to pay £159 for a 160GB 5400rpm hdd. thats more than $300 for a damn 2.5'' drive!

That's called marketing: Get people in the door with a low headline price then make a good profit on the upgrades and extras.

so what we are saying here is that, if we order the vostro 1710 with just one hard drive, DELL will actually remove a "certain part" for the second hard drive to be installed later by the user?

No, the don't actually "remove" anything, they just never put it in there to begin with. Look in the Dell forum, when I was buying a 1720, I think the parts required to add a second drive were about $10 total.
