Have a few questions about a replacement optical drive. Mine will not see the disks anymore. Do I have to order one from HP or could I get one form newegg? I am all so not sure what specs, are interface to look for. I would like to get a replacement here fairly quickly.

    thanks

You ought to contact HP and get a replacement. All nc8430 laptops come with a 3 year warranty and HP considers the OD a user replaceable part.

My drive has failed 3 times, and I always got a replacement fairly quickly. I suggest you try out the HP online support here:

A notebook drive is a notebook drive, but these optical drives are 12.7mm in height. I think they all use the same interface and design.

I am ready to scream now. 3 tries and they still can not send me the right drive. So I will have to send my notebook in by the sound of it. I am leave the country for work in the next few day so sending it to them may not be an option at this point in time. Have to say I am not real happy with the service right now.

I know this thread is pretty old, but I am having exactly the same problem as you are (same notebook model as well). I've gone through three optical drives now on HP's warranty, and they still dont' work properly.

Can you give us an update? What did you end up doing?
