    Hello all,

I purchased a laptop 2nd hand that had no OS on it. I get it home to load a copy of Ubuntu that I have and it won't boot. I see the HP screen and all, but just a black screen after that. Thinking it was the CD, I use my friend's Windows 7 CD to try to boot. Same issue.

I've gone to the BIOS to ensure it would boot from the CD and ran diagnostics on the HDD and memory, all passed.

I know there's something I'm missing. I just need help to figure out what it is.

    Thanks in advance!

Is this how you verified that it will boot from the CD:

    See:
How to Change the Boot Order on a HP Pavilion | eHow.com

As mentioned, does a properly prepared USB drive with an O/S Installation on it work?

Is there any other option in the BIOS to not just change the boot order, but to also specify which device will be bootable?

Could the CD drive be defective? Maybe USB will be the only way to install an O/S and/or software on this system.

    Good luck.
