    Gentlemen and Ladies
My question is whether an I7 840QM will work in a Lenovo Y560 0646 laptop. The currently officially supported CPU is an I7 820QM. The motherboard's HM55 chipset seems to support it .As well as the heatsink, which in my unit is the one from the i7 740QM. So anyone have any luck with the I7 840QM?
    Thanks in advance
    SGCloud :)

Of course it will. Practically the same Cpu as 820qm. As long as you have dedicated gpu.

Hope this works for you - but I have to ask; to what purpose?

If this is a learning experience - sure, go ahead and learn.

If this is for more performance; note that you will get at the most less than 8% improvement in some workloads.

Just curious what your motivation is for switching the cpu?

    Tiller,
I currently have the option to purchase from a friend his i7-840QM to replace the I5-480m that is in the machine. The Lenovo guys checked the serial number of the laptop and told me that it would support up to the i7-820QM, so I figured I would find out if anyone was successful using the 840 before I plunk $100 down on the upgrade.

Not if Lenovo are a bunch of pricks like HP, where dual core boards don't support quad core processors...
