    Hello,

I bought a new ram for my laptop and when I install them as dual the laptop just don't start the windows and keep giving me black screen, and when I try to enter the setup screen it works and it shows me that the ram is recognized!!

my laptop is TOSHIBA P100-222 :D

the ram I bought are 2 slots of (Kingston 2GB DDR2-667 2 GB G SODIMM Laptop SDRam) that its total of 4GB

my laptop support up to 4GB ram so I don't think that this is the problem, it was running 1GB ram as (2 x 512MB) dual but when I install it as (2 x 2GB) it doesn't start the windows !!! :(

now its running as 2.5GB as ( 512MB + 2GB ) and I tried both of the new rams as alone on it and it dose start so the ram slots work as singles but looks they don't love each others :(

any ideas about what is the problem here

    thanks in advance

Ironic the matched sticks won't play nice. I really don't have any clue. I do observe when paired with PC4200/4300 it works? Maybe having trouble down clocking? It is supposed to take 4GB like you said and BIOS sees. If XP isn't there a patch to run 4GB or am I mistaken?

I would not expect it to work off disc if what I am thinking. Disc is still XP so same OS same problem. I will check at lunch.

nobscot6 link goes Vista can you find XP, I'm at work so can't right now?

Have you tried starting in safe mode, there is something call PAE and something you set in the boot ini. But safe mode should avoid this so if it starts see how much RAM is recognized. There is much on XP and 3GB RAM and a thing called a "3GB switch" I do not now if this is your problem. It seems like the usual problem is failure to recognize not failure to boot. Like I said at work happy to read up tonight if no one who knows what's wrong posts. If it starts in safe mode likely not RAM or BIOS back to OS. If it does not start likely different problem. I suspect OS because you you say RAM shows up in setup screen? Well that indicates hardware (RAM) and BIOS working. Google "XP 3GB" switch if you want to consider on your own.

Sorry to drag up a thread that's headed towards a year old.

I have a similar problem with my machine. I updated the bios to the newest one available, but it only recognizes 3 of the 4gb I have installed (2x2gb).

    Anyone have any further suggestions?
