Hey guys my laptop recently died, so i took out the 2.5 inch hdd intending to buy an external hdd enclosure so i could hook it up to another computer. When i opened up the enclosure i realized it had a 20 pin hookup, however my hdd had no pins only plastic connectors which look more like an SD card connection or something like that. It is a 7200 RPM Samsung 80gb. What kind of connection is that and where can i find an enclosure that fits it? Thanks for any help

Your computer has a PATA hard drive. You bought an enclosure with a SATA hard drive. You need to get a PATA hard drive if you want it to work in your computer.

and if it isn't what is mentioned above, ensure that it is not some sort of proprietary adapter on the HDD pinouts (though it does sound like an SATA drive)

    Then it's SATA.

You can easily hook it up to a desktop computer with ordinary SATA-cables like the ordinary 3.5" SATA harddrives as they have the exact same connectors.

To me it sounds like his current enclosure is of PATA type :)

Otherwise your choice is the way to go.

Oh whoops, ya you're right; I can't read.

Nonetheless, those PATA to USB adapters usually support PATA and SATA, so it'll still work, you just hafta find one that does both.

yeah sorry about the confusion the enclosure i bought was PATA (pins), but my hdd is SATA, so that makes things easier in terms of finding an enclosure, thanks!
