RAM: more is better. Depending on how fast your FSB is, you'll want to match the RAM speed to that. Lower latency is better.

HDD: 7200 RPM or SSD are fast ... SSD is new technology and expensive. More cache.

In order to really recommend something to you it would help to know your specs and budget.

But new Santa Rosa Laptops generally can't use 800 MHz ram, so they clock back to 667 MHz. I think.

True, that's why I asked for his specs. You are absolutely right.

But for your needs any current DDR2 and good 5400 HDD will do fine all you need is the best GPU you can get. Why? Music does not stress either component mentioned, sound card you could look to upgrade but I doubt it matters, games, does not really push any current RAM if you have enough and 2GB considered good some swear by 3GB, HDD minor. School work, look at what business uses you almost can't buy a computer new that wouldn't work for that.

Fastest hardrive you can get is a 200GB 7200 RPM. You wouldn't really need it. Any drive above 160GB give you very nice performance. As long as it's not 4200 RPM.

And any ram works, get the cheapest you can find. You need ddr2 5400 667MHz. Either get 2x1GB (2GB total) or 2GB+1GB (3GB total).

It would work, but it would clock down to DDR2 5400 speeds, so there's no reason to pay more.
