    Right now I'm using a 80GB 4200RPM Hdd, I forgot the brand.
Anyways I just upgraded the RAM to 2GB, and am looking to get a cheap HDD for this laptop.
I'm looking for a good 7200 RPM drive, but how much extra heat will this generate compared to a 4200?
Or would a 5400 RPM drive be best for what I need?
Size will have to be 100GB maby, but it dosen't matter as much as the speed and noise/heat levels.

Also I need a drive that's been in the market for a bit so it is cheap. I'm looking for this in the markets in China and they don't always have the newest stuff.

I think that the heat difference should be minimal - I'd go with the 7200 though as the speed increase will be significant.

It sounds like you have a 1.8 inch ide hard drive
There is no 7200rpm avail in that form factor
In fact I think you might have a problem upgrading

Let us know if you need 1.8 or 2.5", PATA or SATA.

I believe it is a 1.8 PATA since the laptop is old.
    It is a LG LW20

    Yeah it's 1.8" PATA.

I believe Samsung and Toshiba have some products. Like this one:
    Samsung HS122JC
    http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-SAMSUNG-HS1...temQQimsxZ20081103?IMSfp=TL081103116011r17429

    And this one (160GB)
    Toshiba 160GB MK1626GCB*
    http://74.125.77.132/search?q=cache...+toshiba+1.8"&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=3&client=opera

I suggest searching chinese ebay and google for more. Search for these model or 1.8" 5400rpm. You won't be able to get 7200rpm.

    SSD is an option to.

    Edit: * Oops I meant 160GB MK1629GSG (5,400rpm)

Yes when you mentioned the 4200rpm and the large size I thought it was a 1.8”

    It’s a shame that it’s a 1.8”
    There are not that common
And they are about 2 times the price of a comparable 2.5”
PhilFlow’s recommendation on the Samsung looks good

The Toshiba has good capacity, but with only 3600rpm drive speed it would not give you a measurable boost in performance

    Oops I meant 160GB MK1629GSG (5,400rpm)

PS. You might have to watch for ZIF vs. Pata interface too.

What is the difference between ZIF and PATA?

In your case its the conector that hooks to your laptop motherboard
ZIF is one way that the drives connect
the other way is whith standard pins
You really need to remove the drive and look
Or go into device manager and look for the exact part # for your drive
Then we can short list drives that will work

4200rpm is kinda normal with standard 2.5" also, nothing specific for 1.8" and the size is small in this case :)

I thought there are simple ZIF to PATA adapters available.

If you have the extra space to allow for the adapter Maybe

Best if the OP finds a model #

Then we can research the options
