Yep that should work, that's how it works on desktops, should be the same.

Just to make sure, this will work on an SLI notebook because there is no optimus. If you have a notebook with optimus the ports probably dont go straight to the gpu so it wont work. But if the cpu has no integrated graphics it will work.

What laptop do you wanna do it with?

Much appreciated. Any recommendations on a notebook with 980m sli? I don't see a whole lot of options

Clevo P870DM or MSI GT80 Titan. If you have an unlimited budget the GT80 Titan can now have GTX 980 sli desktop cards.

I believe the Clevo p870dm setup with 980m sli would most likely be priced similarly to the msi gt80 titan anyways. Do you think that they'll be much of a price difference?

I'd expect the P870 to be much cheaper.. MSI's GT72/80 is really overpriced for BGA trash!

Sorry for not understanding the acronym but what is BGA?

The msi I found with 980m sli was about 3300 usd. On mythlogic.com the p870dm with 980m sli runs about 3200 usd. Have any prices from different vendors to share?

MSI has a soldered CPU whereas the P870DM has an upgradeable desktop CPU with no power limits unlike the MSI.. On the whole the Clevo is superior and can use 2 330W PSU's to allow maximum performance of all components unlike MSI...

If the dGPU is wired to the external ports, yes. If you have Optimus and your iGPU is wired to your external ports (like on clevo P6xxSx or P1xxSM-A machines) then you won't get to use it. If you've got a MSI GT60/GT70 then your dGPU is wired to external displays, so you're fine.

not related to the topic but did you mean that when I connect my P671SE to an external monitor, it'd be the iGPU running? Or did you mean I won't get to use the G-sync but still can run the dGPU while connecting to an external monitor?

Yes, Wind Turtle. When you connect your P671SE to an external monitor, your iGPU is pushing the display (as far as I remember). You will never be capable of using Gsync on that machine, ever.
