    Hi all,

I own an Acer 5520G laptop whose Nvidia 8400M video card fried some time ago (symptoms: hardware acceleration makes the display just a storm of flashing pixels; disabling it, I can use the system with some scattered red/green pixels around).

Anyway I'm happy with the laptop as a whole, and its warranty expired, so I bought an Nvidia 9600M to upgrade (I checked and the MXM type is compatible).

I was wondering, due to the particular design of the heat pipes connecting to the fan, can I replace the video card without touching the CPU, so that I don't have to clean/apply the thermal paste on it? I'd just need to remove the GPU assembly...

Just wanted to check for suggestions before taking the laptop apart :D

    Thanks!

I am not sure if you can swap out the GPU on this model. Most likely it is being soldered to the motherboard.

    cheers ...

I wouldn't know, but I do know that the 9600M GT has some issues with the 5x20G series of notebooks. (The 9600M G S, however, works fine)
Best of luck with the upgrade!
