i have just seen and ordered a great little storage device using a normal 2.5 drive self contained shock proof and powered by 2 usb2 sockets when being used and is detected automaticaly like a usb pen drive and also it appears to have won quite a few awards from uk pc magazines, but yes i did see others from western dig. .. freecom and seagate but this won/beat them on the awards for speed and size :)

    Formac 160GB USB2.0 External 2.5" Hard Drive 8MB Cache - Retail

great for backing up my internal sata drive before formating installing new operating system :p

and its cheaper than buying a drive and external caddie at least from http://www.ebuyer.co.uk it is as its only £60 inc vat and free delivery :)

anyone tried a usb2 powered portable drive??

it says in the magazine and the website it has a max transfer rate of 48mb/s using a 5400rpm drive and utilizing both usb2 sockets for data transference.
but then for me speed is not the issue as it is just to backup data ready to format internal sata drives. hope it as good as the mags say :p
