After a some sort of new virus attacked my xp and I had to upgrade to vista (I didn't have my xp installation cd, just works vista). I have a 500gb external, which works fine on vista, but I just bought a 6-pin to 4-pin firewire cable hoping to get higher speeds, but I plug it in, my laptop makes a noise (as when I connect anything) but nothing pops up and I go into My Computer and nothing is there, any suggestions? :(

It's possible your external drive requires special drivers for use via firewire, I'd check on the manufacturers website to see if anythings available.
