What should I use as a filter over the fan ducts to stop most of the dust? It's crazy dusty here, and compressed air only does so much.

Bumpity bumpity... seriously though, no has done this before?

As Ronald Reagan used to say, "well.....".
some might say you'll just prolong the inevitable which is to just clean 'em.
others' might say you'll just be letting through the finer particulates.
it'd have to be something with low restriction because i can blow air through a straw harder than they can move air.
maybe some air cond. intake filter material, cut down to size.
a couple of layers of cheesecloth.
scotch brite. you know, the denser kind.
tea bag material with cotton batting.
etc.
thing is, if you increase the restriction to much, the fan might draw air from some other area. to do a complete job, you'd want to properly seal and shroud the fan from inside. -
I did this to my old laptop as it had an air vent on the top through which it sucked all the cooling air.
I got a piece of foam that came with a 3.5" HDD package and cut it down to size then used double sided to stick it to the area above the fan. The foam itself was not very restrictive but stopped the dust from getting sucked into the fan. It was shocking to see how quickly the pristine white colour changed to a grey as it got filled up with dust particles. -
You will restrict the intake by putting any sort of filter. Its a choice between a hotter notebook or a less dusty one.

i'm doing this since i bought my hp 8510p. I put a 3M brand air filter at the air intake and surely after one month the dust was clogged there. so i changed it every 1 or 2 weeks depends on my usage period and place. I even installed an airfilter on my notepal infinite notebook cooler intake filter.
Filter paper?
