    External hard drive dilema

    Well to start off im running vista so im not sure what to do i have a rougly $100 budget and i would like atleast 100gig capcity and run entirely off of a usb port or two. i have been looking all night at them and im not sure of what to get.

    you can definately pick up 100GB for less than $100

    seagate freeagent or western digital mybook's are good choices but im sure some people here will tell you to make your own with an enclosure and internal hdd.

    well i was looking and supposdly vista doesnt like many of the pre made hard drives such as the WD passports

    I have 2 WD passports, 1 old 1.0 silver and 1 new 2.0 black. Both work perfectly with Vista.

    did you do anything special with them to get them to work because i have been reading reviews and some have been having problems with them

    I think you have trouble when you are using Readyboost.

    External HDDs are all plug and play, and they work in Vista just like how they work in XP. I've plugged in Seagates, WDs, ACOMDATAs, Maxtors. All of them have worked like a charm.

    MyBook, IMHO, should be your first choice - they have better protection than the FreeAgents.

    I do nothing special, just plug-em in and they work.

    As for Mybook vs Passport...keep in mind that Passports are bus power, while Mybooks need an external power cord.
