So I recently went from a Microsoft LifeChat 2000 to the Steelseries Siberia V2 headset, but initially I found the newer (and more expensive pair) to provide much worse bass than my previous pair. Soon enough I realized that it was because the Microsoft headset was via USB, which meant it had its own internal sound card which was likely superior to whatever is in notebooks these days. Unfortunately the Siberia V2, by virtue of its 3.5mm connectors, relies on my onboard sound card, which I now know is pretty awful.

I'm looking for a decent but cheap external sound card (7.1 preferred) which connects to my notebook via USB and allows 3.5mm microphone and audio output. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, since I'm totally new to this type of product and the array of options is way too large to try and understand fully. I don't need any features other than the 3.5mm output, so I'd rather not pay extra for bells and whistles I don't need. At the same time I need a solid sound card, so it probably won't come too cheap.

    Cheers and thanks in advance!
