I purchased a new laptop in November with a 15.6" HD display and HDMI port.

I've been using a spare Samsung UE22F5000AK (c. 2013) TV via HDMI, as my external monitor since then. I'm quite satisfied with it as it's video and audio features are superb, but whenever the laptop goes into screen saver mode, it disconnects the external monitor. That's quite frustrating, especially if I have processes (music, video etc.) running at the time.

If I purchase a real monitor, will it resolve this problem? If so, can anyone recommend an upgrade replacement for the Samsung that will retain those features?

It is not the external monitor connected that is the problem.

Check the options on the notebook and make sure that the external display is not mirrored with the internal display. Also check your power options (I would disable them all). If your notebook came with manufacturer bloatware installed, also check in those programs for what is syncing the two displays.

I don't think a new display would resolve this issue, unless there are further options in the Samsung monitor that are interfering too.

    Good luck.

    Thanks for the information.

It turns out the problem was in the OS power settings section. It was set to turn off the display after 20 minutes (default). I changed it to "Never". It's working nicely now, and I discovered the screen saver actually works quite well. :D
